Looking Up at Chin Swee

Chin Swee Caves Temple sits high up in the Genting Highlands. Everything there is colour and curves, so I spent most of my time looking up. These went up on the page just before Chinese New Year.

A Roof Full of Stories

Red, gold, turquoise, and dragons running along the top. Every part of this roof has something painted on it.

I cut the building off at the bottom and gave half the frame to the sky, so the roof looks like it’s floating on the clouds.

The Pagoda

Floor after floor, all the way up to a golden tip. I put it right in the middle and kept the frame tall.

The sky behind it is all moving cloud, and the pagoda is the one still thing in the picture.

Reaching for the Light

The last one is almost all sky. Only the corner of one roof comes into the frame, ending in a little dragon that seems to reach up toward the light.

It’s the smallest detail of the three, and maybe the simplest way to say how the whole place felt.
