Jonker Walk, Melaka · March – April 2024

Jonker Walk Colours

Back to Melaka, this time to the streets around Jonker Walk. Here the colour is everywhere: on the windows, on the shop signs, even on the crowd. One window, one street, one sign.

The Green Shutters

Above an old shophouse, two green shutters stand wide open, with palm leaves hanging in front of them. The wall underneath is cracked and patched in orange and rust.

Old walls, fresh green paint. For me, that’s Melaka in one picture: old, but still very much lived in.

In the Middle of the Crowd

Jonker Walk at its busiest: blue tents, signs everywhere, people walking in every direction.

I didn’t stay on the side for this one. I stood right inside the crowd, so the faces fill the bottom of the frame and the street keeps going behind them, all the way to the hill.

Bread on the Wall

Above this bakery, the sign is the bread itself: giant buns and pastries hanging on the wall, one on top of the other.

It made me smile. A little funny, a little crazy, and very Melaka. I framed it between the pink tiled shop and the yellow one next door.
